Title: Director of Communications
Phone: 517-896-1456

As MITA's Director of Communications since 2000, Nancy has handled a wide variety of duties. She was a major player on the team responsible for the award-winning public and media relations efforts for the successful Clean Water Michigan ballot initiative in 2002 and the more recent successful road funding effort; created and maintained the association's first website and subsequent updates; and helped to develop the first website and social media efforts for the the road funding initiative. Nancy's education, experience and creativity continue to serve the association well during the current FixMIState campaign, as she offers guidance and ideas to the consultants who are leading the campaign in conjunction with MITA's Executive Vice President Mike Nystrom. Before joining MITA, Nancy, who graduated with high honor from Michigan State University's Honors College with a degree in communications, was an award-winning journalist, photographer and editor for newspapers in Michigan and New York before moving into public relations. Right before joining MITA, she served as the media relations specialist at a public relations firm in East Lansing. While at that firm, she coordinated a special event for Associated Underground Contractors (AUC) called "MIchigan's Top 10 Engineering Projects of the 20th Century." The event garnered more media attention than AUC had ever experienced. Nancy's media relations talents continued to be an asset to MITA, as she helped build a rapport with the media over the years from the days of AUC to the merger of AUC with the Michigan Road Builders to form MITA in 2005 and beyond. Her newspaper experience also makes her job as editor of MITA's Cross-Section Magazine and Annual Membership Directory a pleasure, as she especially enjoys meeting members to interview them for member and associate member profiles and other stories that appear in the magazine. Nancy is your main contact to submit stories, photos and paid advertising for the magazine, in addition to advertising for the annual directory. Her other roles at MITA include overseeing all print publications and assisting MITA members with their own marketing, public relations, social media and websites. A former board member and chapter administrator for the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), she is currently a member in good standing with PRSA and the Michigan Society of Association Executives (MSAE). Nancy lives in Okemos with her husband, Tim, with whom she raised two sons, Matthew and Andrew.
