The Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association (MITA) issued the following statement today in response to the report,“Benchmark for Success: A Comparison of State Infrastructure,” which was commissioned by The Michigan House of Representatives under the direction of former Speaker of the House Craig DeRoche.

MITA commends the Michigan House of Representatives for taking the time to thoroughly review and compare the state of Michigan’s transportation system to those around the country.

Mike Nystrom, vice president of government and public relations for MITA, said “The findings of this study confirm the dire state of Michigan’s interstate highways, and the crucial component that transportation infrastructure plays in our state’s economy.”

“We are not keeping pace with neighboring states because Michigan has chronically under funded our own transportation network and we have not taken the proper steps in today’s economy to fully fund our system and make transportation infrastructure a priority.”

Nystrom added that state policy makers must recognize Michigan’s long-term needs as we face an estimated annual shortage of $700 million for state-managed roads and another $2 billion at the local level.

MITA is a statewide trade association that represents more than 800 companies involved in the highway, bridge and underground construction industry.
