The state’s main business group, the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, announced publicly today support for a sizeable funding increase for transportation, including a nine-cent gas tax increase phased in over three years.

While outlining the Chamber’s legislative priorities for 2007, the business group said that transportation was a crucially important economic development issue.

In addition to the gas tax increase, the Chamber’s transportation plan includes an increase in diesel fuel taxes to match regular gas taxes and a local-option vehicle registration fee. The group is also suggesting a study to determine the feasibility of toll roads or fast lanes in highly-congested urban areas.
