Will you get a fix? See how Michigan will use $115 million for 103 road, bridge repair projects

LANSING, MI -- Michigan lawmakers on Thursday announced funding for 103 transportation projects made possible by $115 million previously set aside in the Roads and Risks Reserve Fund.

The projects, highlighted in a series of press conferences around the state, include bridge maintenance and road repairs from Monroe to the Upper Peninsula, from West Michigan to Metro Detroit.

"This is fantastic news and a great first step toward improving our roads," Senate Majority Leader Randy Richardville, R-Monroe, said in a release. "…There is still much more work to be done to address all of our infrastructure needs in Michigan, but this is an important part of that process."

The project announcements were divided by region:

Metro Detroit will see the largest share of funding, with $36 million going to the four-county area for projects that include repairs on Eastbound I-96 in Oakland County, the notoriously dangerous I-275/Ford Road interchange in Canton and Belle Isle pavement used for the Detroit Grand Prix.
The "University Region" will receive $20 million for various projects, including work on Samaria Road in Monroe, Michigan Avenue in Lansing, and M-106 in Jackson.
The "Grand Region" will see $15 million for M-37 resurfacing north of Three Mile in Kent County, bridge repairs on I-96 in Ottawa County, work on Sternberg Road in Muskegon County and more.
Other Southwest Michigan communities will receive $13.6 million for various projects in and around Kalamazoo, including resurfacing of M-227 in Marshall and a portion of the Red Arrow Highway in Berrien County.
The "Bay Region" will get $12.8 million in funding for work on M-83 in Saginaw County, US-23 in Arenac, US-10 in Midland and other projects in Genesee, Gratiot, Lapeer, Isabella and Bay counties.
The "North Region" will get $10.5 million for projects in and around Grand Traverse County, including reconstruction of Old US-131 in Wexford County and work on West Front Street in Traverse City.
The "Superior Region" in the Upper Peninsula will receive $6.9 million, including $4.4 million for a project to lift and resurface US-2 in Schoolcraft County.
Michigan lawmakers have been unable to answer Gov. Rick Snyder's call for $1.2 billion a year in new road funding, but they created the Roads and Risks Reserve Fund as part of the 2013-14 budget and made an initial deposit of $230 million.

An additional $115 million will be available for road projects -- or other purposes, if they see fit -- in February.

Legislative leaders continue to discuss potential sources of long-term funding for Michigan roads, but House Minority Leader Tim Greimel (D-Auburn Hills) said this week that Democrats are unlikely to support any package that includes increased taxes or fees.

Lance Binoniemi of the Michigan Infrastructure Transportation Association commended the Legislature for Thursday's investment announcement but said the "one-time source of funding is not adequate in comparison to the $2 billion in additional annual funding that is needed for roads and bridges in Michigan."
