Republican U.S. Senate candidate Terri Land proposed slashing the federal gas tax and allowing the states to decide to make up the revenues with higher state taxes for roads.  Mike Nystrom of MITA commented on this plan.   “The challenge with this plan is that the first step is an elimination of the federal gas tax,” he said.  “I think that would be a pretty big challenge in Washington to just think that they’re going to eliminate federal funding.  But secondly, the next step would be an even larger hurdle with the debate that we’re having now to increase our own state funding.  This plan relies on states to pass an equivalent gas tax to what’s being collected currently.”
