MITA Statement Regarding State of the State Address
Lance Binoniemi
Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association
Vice President of Government Affairs
The Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association applauds Governor Rick Snyder for, once again, calling upon the Legislature in his annual State of the State address to take action on adequately funding Michigan’s infrastructure.  Fixing our roads will save lives, save future repair costs to our state and save Michigan drivers’ money by reducing the cost that the average Michigan motorist spends each year on unnecessary vehicle repairs.
Not fixing our roads now will cost us even more in the long term. Currently, 32 percent of Michigan roads are in poor condition.  If we do nothing, by 2023, this number will jump to over 65 percent.  Bringing a road from poor to good pavement condition costs at least six times more than it does to maintain a road in fair and good condition.  Fixing our roads now is fiscally responsible for the state.
Not only will fixing the roads improve Michigan’s economy; it will also save lives.  One-third of all fatal and serious traffic crashes are due (at least in part) to poor road conditions.
Michigan has had a lot of successes under Governor Snyder, which he alluded to during his address.  While looking at all of Michigan’s dashboards, only a couple are going in the wrong direction.  Michigan’s infrastructure is one that is on the decline.  It’s time to reverse that and fix Michigan’s roads.  We are ready to partner with the Governor and the Legislature to support a sustainable, long-term solution now that will improve our infrastructure.
