Lansing State Journal

The article published on February 19, “Senate Eyes Road Rescue,” is terribly misleading because the $100 million proposed by the Senate is not going to fix the deplorable condition of our roads.  The one-time infusion of funds will barely make up for the extra money that has been spent this winter on snow plowing and salt, which leaves very little to actually “rescue” Michigan’s roads.   MDOT alone is expected to exceed its winter budget by over $40 million, and numerous county and municipal road agencies are also dealing with budget shortfalls due to extreme maintenance demands.  In order to fix our roads, Michigan needs $2 billion or 20 times the amount discussed in the article per year, every year going forward.  The horrendous pothole season that we are facing this year is the direct result of inaction by the Michigan Legislature.  It’s time for our state elected officials to wake up, do the jobs they were elected to do, and fix Michigan’s roads with a long-term investment solution.
