Although Monday’s flooding in was an unprecedented, catastrophic event that overwhelmed the sewer system and roads in the Detroit area, MITA recognized this news as an opportunity to remind the media and public that we need to prepare for the future by investing now in our underground infrastructure, as well as continuing to push for increased transportation investment.
MITA put out a press release Tuesday: “Metro Detroit Floods Expose Underinvestment in Infrastructure,” which highlighted the need for underground funding.  The media is now focusing more on the sewer angle of the flooding event, including the following articles.  This type of media attention is a positive sign for the underground industry, and MITA will continue to work the media on your behalf.
Detroit Free Press: “Duggan Says Crews Assessing City Roads After Rain  Overwhelmed Detroit Sewers.”
The Detroit News: “Outdated Sewers Can’t Prevent Metro Detroit Floods”
Detroit Free Press: “Editorial: Re-Envision Infrastructure In Wake Of Historic Rainfall.”
The Detroit News: “Metro Detroit’s Sewage Overflow Feeds Lake Erie Algae  Growth”
Michigan Public Radio: “Instead Of Preparing: Our Leaders Seem To Shrug Their Shoulders At Extreme Weather Events”
The Detroit News: “Flood Exposes Weak Infrastructure”
